Makin' Micheladas!

Updated: Apr 6, 2018

Last night I threw a temper tantrum over a slice of chocolate cake.

Like, for real you guys, the most hysterical, unreasonable, dramatic, spoiled brat meltdown.

Oh the screams and shrieks and sobs that shook my little apartment! I howled as loud as I could with clenched fists and big eyes. I yelled curse words and slammed doors. I pulled at my hair and writhed on the floor like I was actually possessed.

All because Tim ate practically the whole slice of German Chocolate Cake that I had asked him to pick up at the store for me on his way home from work the night before.

I'm actually sort of shocked he didn't break-up with me right then and there. Just up and walk away from two-and-a-half years of "Kate and Tim" because I couldn't keep my cool over some slice of store-bought cake.

In my defense, I did have a hell of a week and I wasn't so really mad about the cake at all and more just beyond poorly handling the stresses of an insane time. They are none excuses, but on top of a full week of work, some freelance projects that I've picked up to help pay the rent, and working on this blog, I was also on my period and dealing with the most debilitating symptoms of PMS. Irritability, anger, and mood swings, which I'll admit are a pain the ass for me to deal with, let alone poor Tim. I was also simultaneously suffering from a pinched nerve in my lower back that had landed in me in the emergency room at 6 am on Monday morning.

So it was a hard week and I caused a huge scene and then I got another slice of chocolate cake even though I didn't deserve it.

And all bitching aside, I don't know about you, but I really need a drink.

So this week, I'm makin' Micheladas!

What’s a Michelada?

It’s the best damn drink in the world, that’s what!

If you're from Southern California you need no explanation, as they're a bubbly beer favorite for pretty much every occasion (brunch, lunch, just because...) but, for those who don't know, the Michelada is one of a number of cerveza preparadas that combines beer with other ingredients to make for a savory (yet far classier) shandy of sorts.

If you know me at all, it's not hard to figure out why these beer cocktails are my drink of choice. Spicy. Sour. Salty. All in one sip. They're refreshing in the summer, the savory mix of spices and lime juice pairs perfectly with your summer BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers. And in the winter, a few more drops of hot sauce will help warm to you up, I'm sure.

And they're so simple to make, too. So let's whip some up, get drunk as fuck, and forget all our problems.

Below is my favorite go-to recipe but what I love about this drink is that, like the Bloody Mary, it's also an ideal canvas for experimentation. Its constants are good Latin American lager, salt and lime, but you could get really creative and add any combination of tomato juice, hot sauce, citrus and spice that you want.

Cheers, bitches.

Michelada

1 serving

5 mins prep/cook time

Ingredients:

1 Can/Bottle of a good, cold Mexican Lager (I like to use Pacifico, Modelo, Tecate) 10-20 dashes of Tabasco hot sauce (You could also use Tapatio, Cholula, or any others that you love. Try also mixing in your favorite Bloody Mary mix, tomato juice or salsa.) 1 lime

1 clove of garlic, smashed (This is the secret ingredient, kids. The flavor that makes your guests say, "What is this delicious drink?!") A scoop of ice Margarita Salt (I like to experiment with different spices for the rim of the glass. Try a sugar/salt mixture, citrus salt or even celery salt.)

Instructions:

1. Rim a pint glass with your favorite cocktail salt 2. Fill the glass with ice 3. Squeeze the juice of one whole lime into your glass

4. Pour in your beer 5. Mix in 10-20 dashes of hot sauce depending on spice preference

6. Stir in one whole smashed garlic clove 6. Serve with a lime wedge and drink with a straw 7. Drink until drunk
